Hans "Doc" Ettes is in zijn normale leven huisarts en al lang bezig met de geschiedenis van de 101st Airborne Division. In 1994 kocht hij zijn eerste Willys jeep. Enkele jaren later, toen hij de smaak te pakken kreeg, begon hij zelf met restauratie van jeeps en heeft er nu twee zelf gerestaureerd: een Willys MB met de naam "PARA-DICE" en een Ford GPW "Poop Deck Pappy" en probeert de jeeps zo compleet mogelijk te krijgen. Verder als aandachtsgebied uiteraard de uitrusting van de 101st airborne paratrooper, medische militaria en hij is ontwerper en webmaster van deze site. Het meeste plezier heeft hij aan de contacten met de veteranen en zijn vrienden van de "Triple A ".

Hans "Doc" Ettes is a general physician in normal life and interested in the history of the 101st Airborne Division for years . In 1994 he bought his first Willys jeep. After a few years he really got the taste and started restoring jeeps . Now he's got two jeeps restored both by himself : a Willys MB called "PARA-DICE" and a Ford GPW with the name "Poop Deck Pappy". He tries to complete the vehicles as much as possible. Other areas of interest are of course the outfit of the 101st airborne paratrooper, military medical artifacts and designing this site. What he likes most are the contacts with the Veterans and his "Triple A " friends.

"In 2002 heb ik voor het eerst (en het laatst) de Vierdaagse van Nijmegen gelopen. Ik wilde zelf eens "aan den lijve" voelen wat het was om lange marsen te maken in de outfit van de paratrooper van toen met 10 kilo bepakking. Aanvankelijk zouden we met een aantal vrienden in airborne uniform de 160 km gaan lopen, maar al vóór de trainingstochten haakte de een na de ander af. Uiteindelijk heb ik het dan zelf alleen moeten doen. Soms gaf het aanleiding tot de nodige vragen en hilariteit van de omstanders die het uniform niet goed konden plaatsen. De laatste 10 km van de 4e etappe had ik gelukkig de broodnodige steun van drie man van de "Screaming Ducks" die mij over de "Via Gladiola" in Nijmegen heen hielpen. Een bloedblaar aan de voet maakte die laatste kilometers nog moeilijker. Grappig was dat op een rustplek vlak vóór de finish, ingericht door het Amerikaanse leger, de "echte" GI's zich erover verbaasden dat ik al die kilometers op "die" paraboots gelopen had. De waardering voor dit stuk "Living History" was enorm. De beloning was het "Vierdaagsekruis", een Koninklijke onderscheiding (de enige die ik ooit zal krijgen), erkend door veel NAVO lidstaten. Misschien krijgt het een plaats op mijn airborne uniform.".

"In 2002 I walked the famous four days marches in Nijmegen for the first (and the last) time. I wanted to feel what it was to march in a vintage paratrooper uniform with 10 kilograms in and around my musette bag. The idea was to walk these 160 kilometers in World War II paratrooper outfit with a few friends. Unfortunately one after the other dropped out for some reason or another even before starting the training. So eventually I did it all by myself. Many times during the walk I had to answer questions of bystanders, who were not familiar with this uniform. The last 10 kilometers on the last day I had the help of three men of the "Screaming Ducks" who escorted me over the "Via Gladiola" to the finish line. A blister on my right foot made these last kilometers very painful. It was really funny to see the faces of the "real" GI's at a resting stop who couldn't believe that I walked all these kilometers on these awfull boots. The appreciation for this piece of "Living History" was enormous. The reward was the "Vierdaagsekruis", a Royal decoration, recognized by many NATO countries. Maybe I'll put it on my uniform.".

"Een week vóór de Vierdaagse had ik al vakantie geboekt op Texel. Nu is daar een uitmuntende jumpschool waar zowel met de "square" als met de "bol" gesprongen wordt. Dat was dé kans om ook eens te voelen wat het is om met parachute uit een vliegtuig te springen. Ik had vantevoren gevraagd of het mogelijk was om in uniform omlaag te gaan - er zijn nu eenmaal bepaalde veiligheidsvoorwaarden - maar.... géén probleem. Na een instructie van ongeveer 10 minuten het vliegtuig in en op 3 kilometer hoogte er weer uit. Na een vrije val van 2 kilometer (30 seconden!) ging de parachute open en daarna duurde het een kleine 5 minuten voordat ik weer aan de grond stond. Een fantastische ervaring! Vóór de sprong had ik de "jumpwing" op het uniform met tape afgeplakt. Weer terug op aarde werd hij plechtig onthuld door de tandempiloot.".

"The week before the Four Days Marches I was on holiday on the Island of Texel with my family. At Texel there is a jumpschool where you can jump with the "square" parachute and with the military "round" parachute (the only jumpschool in The Netherlands). This was the opportunity to feel what it's like to jump out of an aeroplane. Beforehand I asked if it was allowed to jump in a vintage airborne uniform ; no problem.... After 10 minutes instruction I went into the plane and got out again at 3 kilometers. After a free fall of 2 kilometers (30 seconds!) the parachute opened and it took about 5 minutes to be back on the earth again. It was a fantastic experience! Before the jump I taped the jumpwing on my uniform and after I got back on the ground, the tandem pilot took the tape off in an "official ceremony".
