Net zoals in 2003 waren wij tijdens de "Open Museum Dagen" in Best te gast in het Museum "Bevrijdende Vleugels". Ook nu maakten we een mooie reportage met dank aan de medewerkers en vrijwilligers van het Museum. Laat in de middag heeft een van de medewerkers ons op sleeptouw genomen in onze jeeps langs de bijzonderheden rondom het Museum dat ligt op de dropzone van de "Holland Drop" van de 101st Airborne. Opnieuw dus weer "re-enactment ONLY at the historical sites".
Just as in 2003 we were present during the "Open Museum Days" in the village of Best at the site of the museum "Wings of Liberation". The staff and the volunteers of the museum made it possible for us to take these nice pictures and one of the volunteers - a local historian - took us on an excursion around the museum and told us some stories that you can't find in any historybook about things that happened over here in september 1944. Actually, the Museum is located on one of the dropzones of the 506th PIR! So again.... "re-enactment ONLY at the historical sites".

Een van de dropzones..... Het is verbazingwekkend hoe de geallieerden toch precies wisten waar de ideale dropzones te vinden waren. Mooi vlak en zonder obstakels. In de verte de bosrand waar de para's zich verzamelden. Momenteel staan op deze lokatie tientallen meters hoge electriciteitspalen. Met Adobe Photoshop heb ik die verwijderd. Het landschap heb ik zo gelaten.
One of the dropzones.... It surprizes me how the Allies managed to find the right location for the dropzones. Nice and flat and no obstacles. At the horizon the assembly point for the paratroopers. Now a days there are very tall electricity masts at this location. I removed them with Adobe Photoshop. I left the rest of the picture as it is......
De "Paulushoef" lag midden tussen de dropzones en was voor de piloten een markeringspunt, vooral omdat de naam van de boerderij in de dakpannen van de schuur was te lezen (nu niet meer!). De boerderij was ook een veldhospitaal tijdens de gevechten. Boven de ramen aan de voorzijde is de "Eagle" te zien.
The "Paulushoef" farm was a mark for the pilots of the C-47's and the gliders, especially because the name of the farm was "written" in the tiles of the roof of the shed in the back. During the fights it was used as a field hospital. Above the windows in the front you can see the "Screaming Eagle".
